Das Europäische Schwere- und Geoidprojekt (EGGP) der Internationalen Assoziation für Geodäsie

Abstract

The present contribution describes the importance and development of geoid and quasigeoid modelling in Europe with the focus on high resolution gravity field modelling studies performed at the Institut für Erdmessung (IfE) of the Leibniz Universität Hannover. These investigations led to the development of various European geoid and quasigeoid models. Since 2003, the corresponding computations are carried out within the framework of a »Commission 2 Project« of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG). At first, an overview is given on the »European Gravity and Geoid Project (EGGP)«. Then the current state of the data collection is outlined and updated quasigeoid models are presented. Significant accuracy improvements are achieved by utilizing global geopotential models from the GRACE mission, but also new or revised gravity field data sets lead to additional improvements in all investigated cases. The results indicate an accuracy potential of the gravimetric quasigeoid models in the order of 3-5 cm at continental scales and 1-2 cm over shorter distances up to a few 100 km, provided that high quality and resolution input data are available.
